Mottos for Communion Tables
Darrell Pursiful notes that Protestant communion tables usually engrave the quote from 1 Cor. 11:24, “This Do in Remembrance of Me.” While acknowledging its biblical appropriateness, Darrell has a few other suggestions, just as biblical, that might transform church life in healthy ways. The Levellers were a 17th C. movement during the English Civil War. They were a religiously-inspired political movement for democracy, human rights, justice for the poor, and peace. Their strongest leader was Richard Overton, a pacifist General Baptist influenced by Dutch Mennonites. Although I write on a wide range of topics, most often this blog deals with the intersection of faith, especially Christian faith, and work for social justice and peace. So, I have named the blog and dedicated it to the spirit of Richard Overton and the 17th C. Levellers.

This is slightly tangential, but my grandparents would do a tele-communion. They watched TBN, and they would have a thing where they ordered a communion kit through mail, and all the viewers would take it together while watching on TV.
I’m not quite sure what to think about that… But talking about it seems slightly amusing, I don’t know if it should be…
If I may crack wise, Darrell left off, “Eat, drink, for tomorrow you may die.”
You might tell Darrell, Dan. Chance, “tele-communion?” Would there be tele-baptisms? Follow along at home and baptize in privacy along with your electronic church “family?”I’m not even going there.
