Faith & Social Justice: In the spirit of Richard Overton and the 17th C. Levellers

Baptist Peace Fellowship –Peace Camp resources

10-15 July 2006 in Atlanta, GA (Oglethorpe U. and 2 sessions at Ebenezer Baptist Church) is the annual summer conference (“peace camp”) of the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America. Theme: Becoming the Beloved Community! It will be an incredible time in which we are led in Bible study by Dr. Peter J. Paris (Princeton Theological Seminary), hear incredible preaching by Dr. J. Alfred Smith (Allen Temple BC in San Francisco), a keynote by the legendary C. T. Vivian, veteran of the nonviolent Black Freedom movement, etc. There will be music, drama, special awards given to C. T. Vivian, J. Alfred Smith, and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) of the Out of Iraq caucus, storytelling, workshops, special sessions for children, youth. Plus playtime/rest-time/tourist time.

Rabbi Michael Lerner of Tikkun and the Network of Spiritual Progressives will address us and we will have a workshop on Israel/Palestine by Rabbi Lynne Gottlieb, creator of the Jewish/Muslim/Christian peace walks. While we often have ecumenical or interfaith guests, this will be the first time that I know of that two different Rabbis (one female) will address Baptist peacemakers from Canada, the U.S., Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Mexico!

As I said, I will try to blog from there, but your comments won’t show up until I return. (Sorry about that.) Also for the first time there will be tapes and a video highlight and daily podcasts available. See below:

This year’s Summer Conference/Peace Camp is being recorded, and ten key sessions will be available to purchase (individually or as a set) on audio CD. A highlights video will also be available. The recording is being produced by long-time BPFNA friend Thom Butler of Mercury Public Media, and pre-orders are encouraged. To see a complete listing of sessions to be offered, visit Thom’s order page at www.mercurypublicmedia.org/bpfna.html . If you wait until afterward, these will be $10 per session or $70 for the set, but IF you preorder (today through Sunday), this helps Thom purchase materials, etc. and so gets you a discount: $7.50 per session or $50 for the set! Bring peace camp to your church or others so that folks can see and hear what the fuss is all about!

Daily podcasts of many conference sessions will also be available throughout the week. Watch the BPFNA home page for complete details._____for more information, call BPFNA at (704) 521-6051 or email johnny@bpfna.org.

P.S., Yes, I will get back to the liberty of conscience series after this hiatus and then to other Leveller manifestos!
