Economics & Christian Ethics, pt. 5

Overviews for the Church

U. S. Catholic Bishops. Economic Justice for All: A Pastoral Letter on Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S. Economy. National Council of Catholic Bishops, 1986. Now 20 years old there is a planned update that takes into account NAFTA and other changes, but the biblical work, theological reflection, and economic and ethical reflection are so well done that this Protestant has never seen very much with which to argue. If Catholic voters and politicians had worked to implement something close to this vision, America would be a very different, and far more just society today.

Sojourners’ Editors. Who is My Neighbor? Economics as if Values Matter. Sojourners, 1994. Perfect for adult studies at churches and for organizing. Biblical reflection; economic education and alternative proposals; challenges for individuals, for congregations, denominations, for communities and society—it’s all here.
