Peace/Anti-Torture Advocates Protest Gitmo Gulag

U.S. peace activists, led by Cindy Sheehan the “peace mom,” arrived Sunday in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to demonstrate for the closing of the gulag of prisons there which unconstitutionally house all designated by the president as “enemy combatants.” As the Australians would say, “Good on ’em.” But this issue cannot be left to a handful of peace activists. All Christians have a vested interest–related to the very heart of our faith in a crucified Lord–in stopping torture, illegal imprisonment without fair trials, “extraordinary renditions” (=kidnapping people and shipping them to undisclosed locations for unknown reasons, lengths of time, unmonitored treatment, etc.) and related matters. Contact your Senators and Congressional Reps. and, especially, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and urge them to make ending these practices a high priority. Join and support the Religious Campaign Against Torture and raise these issues–precisely as issues of faith–in your own congregations.
