British or U.S. Ph.D. Programs in Biblical Studies?

A great discussion on the SBL site on whether to prefer U.S. or British Ph.D. programs.  As for me, I considered a British degree in Christian ethics, but money was a big issue. I did get to do 6 months at Regent’s Park College, Oxford University and loved it.

  1. There used to be a whole stream of Americans doing Ph.Ds in Britain — in part because evangelical scholars had been able to find posts there, giving doctoral students a friendly environment — consider all the Bruce and Marshall students running around. I think in the days of old tuition at least was very low. But I don’t think the costs are the same anymore and there are very strong programs here.

  2. Personally even if I ever get to do a Phd it is only ever going to be in the UK because of funding. Unlike most people I have come across over here I would prefer the US modular Phd system to our completely research orientated system.
