Americans Want to Get Afghanistan Right

I have mentioned previously that I worry that the quagmire of Afghanistan could destroy the good that Obama wants to do in the same way that Vietnam destroyed LBJ.  I have mentioned previously that foreign affairs elites are breaking with the once-consensus idea of adding troops to Afghanistan, urging Obama to “Get Afghanistan Right.”

Well, now it appears that the majority of Americans agree.  Only 1/3 of Americans approve increasing troop levels in Afghanistan.    I hope the Obama folk are listening.

  1. The question is,”What does President Obama want to do with regard to Afghanistan?” I do not think that he intends to get our forces out of Afghanistan anytime soon – based on some of his comments on the subject.

  2. The economy, the fact that Americans are sick of war, and the need to work on global problems without being tied down in Afghanistan could do much to change his mind.

  3. I heard Obama’s comments on Afghanistan and I believe that he has much more of a militant attitude towards AL Qaeda and the NW frontier of Pakistan where Bin Laden and his fanatics are hiding out.He definitely wants Obama dead – he said so.

  4. Obama is a warmonger, just like Bush!

  5. There is not an iota of truth to the statement that Barack Obama is a warmonger ! He is the President and takes an oath to protect and defend the United States . That, in and of itself, does not make him a warmonger. Self defense is a human right that is recognized by all religions.

  6. Oh, yeah. He appoints a person as secretary of state who said she would “obliterate” iran. he keeps BUSH’S secretary of War (er, I mean defense) and he appoints a 4-star Marine–a trained killer–to be his National security advisor. Even his nominated Attorney General declared in his senate testimony that the US was at war even BEFORE 9/1 because of the Cole, and attacks on embassies in Africa. That sounds like a “warmonger” to me.

We must protest and insist that the US get out of Afghanistan now and that means we have to tell the truth. Obama is a warmonger! healthcare not warfare!

  7. Dear Levellers,

The only way to get Afghanistan right is to get out now. No one , not even Alexander the Great, was able to subdue the Afghans. The British certainly failed as well. Now the US is up to its butt in alligators there, Get out. I hope Obama does not trade the quaqmire of Iraq for the quagmire of Afghanistan.

  8. I don’t think I can call him a warmonger but he’s much the same as Bush (who was a warmonger). Taking an oath to defend his country does not mean going to war, wishing Osama dead and obliterating Iran. And from his defence of Israel in the Gaza conflict and refusal to talk to Hamas I have completely lost hope that things will change.

  9. Kathy try telling the whole truth. You seem to ignore the horrendous things done by Al Qaeda and Hamas and you let Osama Bin Laden slide too. He is a disgrace to true Islam. The USA and Israel are not without fault, but you seem to want to throw the baby out with the bath water.

  10. Jewish Zionism is at fault.
    American Zionism is at fault.
The meddling of the West: GB and USA is at fault.

Hamas and Al Quaida are bad responses to our bad initiatives. The whole thing is bad.
Christians are not to kill or support killing by anyone for any reason.

Obama got a truckload of crap to deal with from a failed totally incompetent appointed president named George W Bush.
I honestly think that Obama has the capability to deal with this much better than Bush.

  11. First of all, the presidential oath is NOT to defend the nation or its people, but to defend and protect the CONSTITUTION from all enemies, foreign or domestic. Thus, Bush’s belief that he had to shred the Constitution to defend the people was a betrayal of his office. Obama is doing better on that score so far. But he has a huge mess to clean up. I also think that he needs to talk to Hamas–and I think he will–but he is buying himself time. He never threatened to obliterate Iran. He is too lenient on Israel, but he won’t give them a free pass like Bush did–and they know it. Israel’s entire timing of the Gaza war was premised on not believing they could do it once Obama was sworn in. (Israel gets most of its military support from the US, which gives us a huge lever on their behavior if we will use it.

  12. Thanks for the shout-out about GAR, Michael. Stay tuned; more to come.

  13. Michael,
I agree with that. Israel was given a free pass by Bush, he did shred the Consitution. Obama needs to talk with Hamas, they are a reality, just as the Zionist state is a reality.

Unfortunately, Israel has a pretty supply of nukes, both tactical nukes and Neutron bombs.
